Collective Dwelling | Sandwich, Kent
This housing development is situated within the historic urban fabric of Sandwich, Kent. The intergenerational living blocks were designed to facilitate new growth within the old town centre. The design utilises features such as arches and courtyards which are characteristic of the areas low-rise traditional English dwellings. Housing is integrated providing living for three families of different sizes. Young families and professionals are integrated into Sandwich's ageing demographic. This interlocking community is made porous by archways which create thresholds to encouraging interactions between people and creating a sense of anticipation between spaces. The introduction of green courtyard spaces will help bring the town back to life, providing thriving hubs of activity and communication.

The housing block was developed to introduce young families and professionals into the area to help combat the ageing population. Intergenerational housing blocks help integrate a socio-demographic groups. Mixing demographics helps to reduce loneliness in elderly and give a greater sense of fulfilment to youth. The cladding is derived from traditional materials studied in the area such as flint and timber. Uneven roof geometries help maintain the uneven skyline in Sandwich utilizing roof spaces for terraces that create multilevel viewing platforms onto the courtyard spaces.
