Theatre Royal Extension | Margate, Kent
The Theatre Royal is an existing Georgian structure in Margate in need of revitalization. Due to multiple extensions the floor levels are uneven resulting in difficulty for people with disabilities. Therefore I am demolishing the interior floors of the Victorian extension and altering the outer leaf. The extension aims to interact with the street level, utilizing small performance spaces to illuminate and provide life to the surrounding public space.
Proposed Extension | New Life
These extensions make the building more porous and opens the beautiful interiors to street level, pulling the public in from the surrounding public squares. This new double height bar provides a space for people to relax before and after shows while also bringing in revenue for the theatre, even when shows are not taking place. The performance alcoves allow audiences to appreciate theatre from different levels and allows artists to display their art form however they chose.

Construction The brick constructed Georgian walls of the existing theater can not support the proposed cantilevered design. A new steel frame is welded and bolted to a steel reinforced concrete retaining wall which serves as an extension to the backstage space. The steel frame acts independently from the Georgian wall, which remains intact as to perverse the layers of history associated with the buildings construction. |
